چکیده

Although child mortality rates have dropped in India over the last two decades, neonatal mortality rates continue to be high. In this paper we use data from the unique nationally representative survey of India 2008 District Level Household Survey (DLHS-3) to analyse the links between neonatal mortality at the household level and household’s access to health facilities. Our empirical analysis underscores the importance of having well-functioning obstetric and neonatal services of District Hospital closer to the rural households. The regression results show that if the services of District Hospitals are brought 10 km closer to the village, it can save one more child out of 1000 births in India. Having emergency obstetric care at the District Hospital is also found to significantly reduce neonatal deaths.
